Craptop

Thanks to planned obsolescence, my only-a-few-years-old laptop is in its death throes. It’s been one decline after another for the past several months, but this week’s adventure is accepting keyboard/mouse input only when it feels like it, which means it’s now 99% useless.

She who laughs last, though. When I moved, I had to give up everything that wouldn’t fit in my car, but by god, I made room for a clunky desktop tower and monitor that have been living under the bed this whole time. The superior durability of electronics from 2009 to the rescue! Whoadamn, Windows 7 is a speedy, intuitive, customizable dream compared to its increasingly crappy descendants. That’s not nostalgia talking—it’s a side-by-side comparison.

Dusty desktop tower and monitor from the olden days of 2009.

HUGE shoutout to Google sync for rendering the internet usable. You get dependent on typing two letters in the search bar and being presented with any path you need to venture along, and nothing being there was the scariest horror movie I’ve ever seen. Never in a million years would I have guessed the portal for my day job, into which I have logged every day for a decade. Will this convince me to write all this down to prevent it from being held hostage by inevitable corporate greed? ADHD says no, but Anxiety might yet triumph.

2022 is trying really hard to make me dead, but this isn’t going to do the trick. I foresaw the dangers and cleaved to The Olde Ways. I’ve got book backups out the wazoo and can pick up the revision right where I left off. There are some programs I can’t run on this abacus, but I can live without them for a few months until… I dunno, a financial miracle occurs. We joke about selling organs, but Pro Tip: Cynical as this may sound, people who want to harvest your least-favorite kidney in a bathtub can’t all be trusted to fulfill their contractual obligations.

Only because this seems like precisely the occasion the donate button was made for, if you’d like to contribute to my acquisition of technology from this decade, I’ll… write you a rhyming couplet in the acknowledgments of a fantasy romance novel?

Or buy some books, whether urban fantasy or contemporary romance is your fruit spread of choice. If you’re comfortable side-loading and want me to get the greatest number of pennies from your purchase, they’re all in my Ko-Fi shop, as well.
