As of today (February 14, 2025), a whole bunch of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are $1.99 at multiple retailers. This is a great opportunity to fill in gaps in your collection.
If you’re new to Sir Terry, Discworld is a massive series that does not have to be read in order. (In fact, I disliked the first book, The Colour of Magic, so much I wouldn’t have read another if I’d started at the beginning.) Because there are multiple arcs featuring certain characters, there are many points of entry. I personally started with the YA-friendly The Wee Free Men, the first Tiffany Aching book but the 30th volume in Discworld, and while there were clearly some references that whizzed past a newcomer, my understanding and enjoyment were in no way diminished. I also like the Death and Witches arcs, but everybody has their own preferences. This is a great opportunity to dip your toe in for cheap.
As of February 26, 2025, Amazon is removing the “Download and transfer via USB” option from customers’ ebook libraries (source: a warning in the popup when “Download and transfer via USB” is clicked). If you have everything beamed directly to your Kindle device, this will have no effect on you. However, if you are one of the many readers who downloads your books for backups or for reading on a non-Amazon device with some help from Calibre or the equivalent, make sure you “Download and transfer via USB” any books you haven’t before the aforementioned deadline because the file type you can “download” into the desktop Kindle app will not play nice in any other environment, by design.
They want to force you to use their data-harvesting devices and apps. If you don’t want to do that (as one might deduce from your history of circumvention), this is a great opportunity to find another place to shop.
